The Motorcycle diaries of Siquijor Island

Arriving the port of Siquijor and catching the real glimpse of this mystique island captures my spirits. It was sunny Thursday and we are mauled with people who offers rent on motorcycle. I was happy they were really helpful in showing us the which place to rent a motorcycle. I refused them politely, since my friend already booked us with our ride.

This is the site that would greet you when you arrived at Siquijor....the magnificent sand stretch and cheap fee for simple amenities.

By the mere sight we were excited to get on the bike and ride all over the island and explore what's store for us. Both of us never disappointed this island had so much to offer and people are very accommodating and friendly.

We conquer the whole island with our motorcycle and swim almost all the nearby beaches we stop by shoot some good pictures and cherish every moments along the way.

Inside the convent i read a few quotes from the priest who made this convent, He said that his building it big because he wants every sick servicemen of Catholics goes here to recuperate. I think his right visiting Siquijor is a sigh of relief aside from the serenity and mysticism it offers there's something in this place that fascinates the heart of every visitors. Mine is more on spiritual tinge and nature. I don't know others..you might want to try..

This bell tower has been standing and watch this town changed through times, it speaks the language of old times and watch every people lives unfold. There's a bellman who once told me that the bell have different tunes for every occasions.

The Ritual of TALAANDIG tribe before ascending the Second highest peak in the Philippines Mt. Dulang-dulang

The IPRA (Indigenous People's Right Act) provide tribes in the Philippines to fully governed their ancestral land according to their beliefs and culture. As a responsible mountaineer we follow their traditions and provide the Shaman the much needed materials for the rituals. In my part I am delighted since it's been a while that I haven't attended a ritual. I have been working with indigenous people here in Mindanao, my great respect for their traditions is what I want to promote both for my newly found hiking buddies.

The shamans say in their native tongue a prayers for the 2 spirits who guarded the forests of Dulang-Dulang. They have done it for many hikers who want to be safe and protected along the journey.

After the prayer each of the carefully selected chicken where slaughtered and their blood spread over the white 3 white eggs. The coins are the number of hikers who will traversed the mountains. The 2 kinds of wine represents the blood and water, the permits from DENR where also presented in the ritual. The White cloth on top of the red symbolizes that we asked for something from the guardians of the forests.

After the slaughtering of the chickens the Shamans took time off and befriended us give us time to take pictures for them. The chickens will be cooked and offered it to the Guardians of the forests followed by the tasting of the banquet for the hikers and the tribes.

The cooked chicken are now chopped for everyone to eat and the wines are also shared to everyone who likes to taste.

The ritual took a little while but i find it very profound, in a way that even if we are one country but our diversity in cultures are very unique.

Too seldom to witness or experience a hike that a hikers heed to the natives more often we follow the DENR or local government policy and neglect the natives that lives in the mountains.

Isn't that a responsible hikers/mountaineers should be more aware of the nature including the creatures that guards the forests?

ADECOR (BALON) – Almost Famous

Adecor a small barangay in Samal Island though much have been said about this small fishing ville. The name ADECOR is tagged along by the famous Aguinaldo Development Corporation who operates pearl farming in Samal Island for almost 30 years .

BALON, as old folks call this place, the name were long forgotten only the structure were visible.

ADECOR's name continues it's fame after the Floreindo family purchase the lot and made this into a premiere beach resort in the Philippines known as Pearl Farm. Samal Island is place in the map of tourists destination in the world. Now, it's prestige continues and attracted more local and foreign tourists in the world.

ADECOR, at present are still a fishing village with fisherfolks settlers living in the shorelines and stretched of fish boat dock in the shoreline. Common liveihood at present were fishing and farming in the upland also local employment from the resorts.

Much of the shoreline fish folks I asked around during couple of visits here said that they are threatened by relocation.

What to do?

Snorkelling in Malipano are one of the activities a visitors should try. Diving in the shipwreck are also exciting for diving enthusiasts. Kayaking or boating to nearby islets within the ADECOR should not be miss. Try the SUTUKIL in the nearby eatery or buy fresh fish and ask locals to cook it.
Sunset is one of the spectacular sight to capture for avid sunset photographer.

Bus ride from Sta. Ana Pier or boat ride in Sasa 11 pier. In Penaplata, bus station a motor vehicle ride for common back packer. For private vehicle road to Brgy. San Jose are the shortest way. Ask any folks around they are hospitable and would like to point you the right way, make sure you will not be confused when locals gives their right and left direction. Above all, enjoy the unexpected thrill when visiting new places.

Frisbee in Samal Island

Weekdays is over far from buzzing streets and city cars noise, Samal island always the great weekend quick getaway. One of the best to spend weekend is to play Frisbee in the white sand. The Frisbee during sunset was different feeling, the humidity of sea air that rush to the lungs creates reverberating breathe among the players. The sweat from fast pace running in the sand and throwing of the disk burns more calories that normal exercise in the treadmill.

When in Samal try frisbee in the beach. It's easy and fun, nowadays Samal folks are starting to play frisbee and more young and adult are attracted to this sports. To start, check for resorts that covers wide area of white sand, since frisbee requires long pass and end zones, wide beach line will be the best area to start the play. Second, start with the basic throws and check the area for passersby, to avoid hitting them. Last, be friendly interact with other guests and invite them to play with your team. In this way, we enjoy and gain new friends through Frisbee.

Some place to play good frisbee are the following: Babusanta in Talikud, Samal island, Isla Reta also in Talikud, Samal Island, Kaputian Public beach, Pigasaan shorelines, Canibad, San Remigio, Penaplata Public park, Penaplata Central School ground, and also Babak District series of beach line which was own privately.

Indeed, Frisbee is really a sport to look forward when visiting Samal island with it's white sand shorelines and clean seawater that attracts player to dip and dive when catching the disk
